Retractable Dog Leashes: A leash or lead is a virtual necessity for any dog owner. Many jurisdictions now make it mandatory to have your dog on a leash at all times, save for inside the home. In the simplest terms, though, using a leash is just common sense, as you’ll want to be able to make sure that your dog doesn’t get away from you. The one drawback to a leash is that it can limit a dog’s freedom somewhat. This is especially evident when you’re in places like parks where, ideally, you’d like to be able to let your dog run around the way he or she wants to which is difficult with a conventional leash. There are alternatives, though, and the most popular alternative type of leash is the retractable leash which provides you with a good solution to this problem.

Other Considerations: Retractable leashes usually have a locking mechanism on the handle which lets the owner control how far the leash is extended. The leash can be kept short when necessary, like when you’re on a sidewalk or in a crowded public space. When you have a little more space some can extend to up to 30 feet. They offer the advantage over ordinary long leashes of staying taut at all times so you can maintain control even at the maximum distance and you won’t have to think as much about the leash getting tangled or being dragged along the ground.
